As you enter tertiary education, you will realise that school life in higher learning is more than just studying well. At this level, schools are also places to create new achievements for yourselves<\/strong> and build alliances\/ networks\/ friendships<\/strong> which may give you an edge when you start working<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Every six months, I give a 90-min internal seminar for my Wildtype Media Group team, which I call ‘MANAGING EVERYONE 101’.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s the gist of my seminar:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

📌 I argue that school doesn’t teach us an important life skill: managing everyone’s expectations<\/strong>. Some folks are clueless about this, and will have to learn it the hard way.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

📌 To start, “manage yourself”<\/strong>. It is unbelievable how many people need a manager to remind them of deadlines, spot repetitive and careless mistakes, and instruct them what to do next. Start by showing initiative<\/strong>, and learn how to take on responsibility and accountability<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

📌 Next, managing our peers<\/strong>, or as I call it, “manage sideways”<\/strong>. That’s actually one of the hardest things to do<\/strong>. It refers to managing those of the same rank or seniority, by contributing to their success so that they lift you up as they move up the ranks, as opposed to succeeding at your expense, leaving you behind.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

📌 Third, “manage up”<\/strong>, which includes communicating progress<\/strong> and seeking feedback from a supervisor<\/strong>. This part has to be done proactively<\/strong>, NOT passively during performance reviews.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

📌 Finally, “manage out”<\/strong>. This is our public image<\/strong> as a PMET to our clients, industry colleagues<\/strong> and on LinkedIn<\/a>. It includes everything from how we dress<\/strong>, to how we communicate authority and value<\/strong>. All of this is specific to each industry<\/strong>. My seminar is tailored to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics<\/em> (STEM), Business-to-Business (B2B), professional services and communications industries.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

📌 (There is actually one more category, \u201cmanage down\u201d, but since this is a 101 seminar, it is for individual contributors.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If everyone gets this right in their 20s, I honestly think they will have no problems getting promoted regularly across their career, getting praised by their clients, and being seen as a team player by their colleagues. They should also be well regarded by their industry peers.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
